Eagles dominate Yellowjackets in season opener

The Veterans Memorial varsity football team won Thursday’s home non-conference game against Edcouch-Elsa, Edcouch, TX by a score of 36-0 at Cabaniss Field.

Serving as the first game for both teams. With the win, Veterans Memorial upgrades its record to 1-0 on the season.
The team increased the bulk of their points in the first half with 35 points.

Junior running back Kobe Piper had an 11-yard touchdown to start off the first quarter. Senior Davis Horne had an interception, which Horne ended up fumbling. Horne redeemed himself when he got two punt blocks.

“We has a great mindset going into the game,” Horne said.“We were faster and bigger than them over all.”

Senior David Soto had a 16-yard touchdown that set the tone of the first half.

“We expected a good game,” Soto said. “We went out on the field and executed.”

Soto then had a 71-yard touchdown pass by Junior Joseph Gonzalez. Piper started off the second quarter with a 21-yard pass and a 29-yard run.

“Offensive wise we played full effort and all heart,” Soto said.

Senior Romario Perez broke the CCISD record for field goal with a 54-yard field goal.

The offense totaled 289 yards, 173 passing and 116 rushing.

The Eagles travel to Churchill San Antonio, TX to encounter the Chargers in a non-league outing on Friday, Sept. 7.  The Chargers go into the outing with a record of 1-0. Churchill won 28-21 in their recent non-league outing against Clark San Antonio, TX.
